Cape Town Opera’s new concert of sacred music, Grace Notes, received a rapturous response last Thursday at St. George’s cathedral which was packed to capacity.
Writing for What’s on in Cape Town Josh Prinsloo described Grace Notes as “a gospel for a new era – one that both breaks with tradition and, simultaneously, unabashedly upholds it…The result of this hybrid is a beautifully refreshing and welcome contribution to what could possibly become a new discipline all its own.”
He recalls the woman sitting next to him who, overcome with emotion, exclaimed, “I didn’t want it to end, and I could sit here and listen to that all night!”
Writing for the Cape Argus, Beverley Brommert described the “powerful sense of reverence” that the music evoked and concluded that Grace Notes is “food for the soul”
The third and final performance of Grace Notes will be held this Thursday at St. Johns Church in Wynberg.
It will be conducted by Marvin Kernelle, Cape Town Opera’s Chorus Master since 2014. Kernelle has returned from making his international debut as a jury member for the European Choir Games, the biggest choral spectacle on earth, held this year in Riga, Latvia (July 16- 23). Kernelle had the privilege of sharing a stage with the eminent conductors and composers Eric Whitacre and John Rutter.
Next year, Interkultur is bringing the World Choir Games to Africa for the first time and Tshwane will welcome choirs from all around the world.
