Opera Blocks is an immersive performance experience that invites babies and toddlers to explore the world of music and theatre in a safe, playful and creative environment. Each production is uniquely themed — from underwater adventures with familiar songs like Under the Sea to glow-in-the-dark nocturnal journeys in Twinkle, Twinkle — captivating both children and adults. 

Designed to spark early curiosity in opera and classical music, Opera Blocks offers a relaxed, welcoming space where adults can move freely and little ones can crawl, toddle and explore. Children are encouraged to touch costumes and props, discovering theatre through natural play rather than traditional concert etiquette. 

Sensory engagement is central to the experience. Through sound, children encounter different styles, tempi, rhythms and vocal colours, accompanied by piano or keyboard. Visual and tactile exploration is supported by interactive lighting, imaginative costumes with removable elements and soft, child-friendly props. Cape Town Opera’s performers are trained to work safely with very young audiences, ensuring that every aspect of the production — from movement to materials — is designed with their wellbeing in mind.
