High school learners of all voice types, grades 8-10, are invited to audition for Cape Town Opera’s Foundation Studio. The Foundation Studio, run by the Education and Participation department, is aimed at high school learners interested in developing their singing and music theory skills in order to move onto tertiary education in opera and classical singing.

The Foundation Studio aims to give high school learners access to music literacy courses that their schools cannot offer. The programme provides on a weekly basis: vocal lessons, theory lessons, lessons in keyboard studies, aural training, meals, transport between school, home, and Cape Town Opera’s offices, as well as all materials needed including stationery. Making sure learners have the necessary skills to enter tertiary education institutions is the primary goal of the Foundation Studio.

Requirements

• A minimum of 65% aggregate at school. Please provide a copy of your school results of 2024 (term 1-4) and 2025 (term 1-2).
• Learners can audition with one or two contrasting, unaccompanied or accompanied arias/
• A pianist will be provided if needed. Sheet music should be submitted with the application form.

Note

• All applicants will be given an audition date and time.
• Please note: no walk-ins will be permitted.
• Learners who do not meet the minimum requirements will not be invited to audition.
