This lunch hour concert by Cape Town Opera, on Tuesday 19 July in the Chandelier Foyer, launches Artscape Theatre’s 10th Women’s Humanity Arts Festival.

As Nelson Mandela wrote in a letter to Helen Suzman, sent from Robben Island on March 1st, 1974, “South Africa has produced a rich crop of eminent women who have played an independent role in our history.”

The concert features Siphamandla Yakupa (soprano), Lukhanyo Moyake (tenor), Mandla Mndebele (baritone), Annemarie Steenkamap (mezzo), Tina Mene (soprano), Nonkululeko Nkwinti (mezzo), guest artist Zolina Ngejane (mezzo) and soprano Noluvuyiso Mpofu who recently took second place and the audience prize in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition.

Noluvuyiso will take the role of Pamina in Cape Town Opera and the South African College of Music’s forthcoming production of The Magic Flute at the Baxter Theatre 27th September – 1st October. In the lunch hour concert she will sing Pamina’s aria, Ach, ich fühl’s.

Other programme items include pieces from the South African operas Mandela Trilogy and Princess Magogo, as well as “Una voce poco fa” from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville among others.

This, the second instalment of Artscape’s Lunch Hour Concert series, offers locals working in the CBD the chance to take a break from their daily routine and enjoy the creativity of the various organisations in Artscape, for free.
