Opera lovers have the rare opportunity to hear one of the greatest singers of our time perform a special gala concert on Saturday 13th at Artscape.

Johan Botha (51), who is based in Vienna with his wife and two children, has recently recovered from liver cancer and will present four South Africa concerts in collaboration with CANSA.

Louis Heyneman, CEO of Cape Philharmonic Orchestra says that “Botha’s voice is sheer gold, and the programme of Verdi, Mascagni, and Puccini and Lehar arias has been specially chosen for his voice – he is a Verdi Specialist.”

Botha’s father nurtured his love of opera and by the age of 10 Botha was determined he would be an opera singer. He made his stage debut at the municipal theatre in Roodepoort as Max in Der Freischütz in 1989. His international breakthrough occurred in 1993 at the Opéra Bastille as Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Since then he has performed at leading opera venues around the world such as the Metropolitan Opera. In 2004, Botha was appointed Kammersänger at the Vienna State Opera, a prestigious title that is eveidence of his status as one of the most important singers of our time.

Bernhard Gueller will conduct the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert will also feature Goitsemang Lehobye (soprano), Bongiwe Nakani (mezzo) and Mandla Mndebele (baritone).

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear one of the world’s finest singers.
