At an intimate event at the Mount Nelson, patrons and friends of Cape Town Opera gathered to officially announce the appointment of Kammersanger Johan Botha as Honorary Patron to Cape Town Opera.

Opening the occasion, Sue Smith, Chairperson of CTO, recalled seeing the Johan in the role of Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger in Vienna. Sue recalls “He was enthralling – extraordinary – and I never could have imagined that 10 years later I’d be standing here welcoming Johan as Cape Town Opera’s Honorary Patron. It is a great honour to do so.”

Sue said “Johan’s singing is sublime, – he can move me to tears or lift me up to great joy. What specially touches me is his modesty, generosity and willingness to help young South Africa singers, and we have so much to learn from him.”
