Così fan tutte is a fascinating ambiguity: it is a sparkling and delicious comedy until it suddenly isn’t.  I have loved this opera for all its contradictions and rich texture ever since I first heard it as an opera-mad teenager. It is still without doubt one of my favourite operas.  One of the things I love most about it is the fact that every time I engage with the piece, it reveals another aspect of itself. It cannot be pinned down, and refuses to be categorised. It is as complicated and messy, uplifting and heart-breaking as it is to be human; there are no absolutes. Only the feelings and evidence of the moment.” says director, Steven Stead.

Amid a year of uncertainty in every aspect of our lives we are delighted to have the opportunity to invite you to enjoy onstage live opera once again.  Cape Town Opera and the University of Cape Town Opera school present Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Baxter Theatre centre 28, 29, 30 (starting time 19:00) and 31 (starting time 15:00) October 2020.

Reuniting the brilliant team responsible for 2019’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi, this production is directed by Steven Stead and features Cape Town Opera Young Artists alongside talented singers from the University of Cape Town Opera School. The UCT Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Maestro Jeremy Silver. Costume and set design is by Michael Mitchell and lighting design by Kobus Rossouw.

Performances will be limited to fifty percent capacity, with COVID-19 protocols in place as regulated at Level 1 during South Africa’s national state of disaster. These will include the availability of hand sanitisers at various points, tracking and tracing recorded when you enter the building, compulsory wearing of masks and social distancing. When booking, you can only book two seats next to each other, with two seats in between the next available pair of seats. Patrons and audience members are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance to avoid delays.

Tickets for all performances will only available for booking online, or at any Pick n Pay store. Please note that the Baxter Box Office will not be open during this time. When you purchase your tickets online, you will be required to provide a name and contact number for each ticket.
