Production Assistant Internship

We are excited to announce that we have a 12-month internship opportunity available for a Production Assistant.

Company Overview

Established in 1999 as a non-profit performing arts company, Cape Town Opera is based at the Artscape Theatre Centre in the Foreshore area of Cape Town and is currently South Africa’s only full-time opera company. The recipient of two International Opera Awards, annual activities include fully staged opera productions in Cape Town, national music education programs for primary and secondary school learners, and national and international touring of operas and concerts. The company has a current staff complement of 4 soloists, 19 chorus members, 9 young artists and 28 artistic and administrative staff, overseen by a seven-member Board of Directors.

Position Overview

As Production Assistant the individual will be part of Cape Town Opera’s vibrant production team and have the opportunity to work on a large variety of stage productions ranging from concerts to operas and musicals. The individual will work closely alongside the Head of Production to determine and fulfil the various requirements for all Cape Town Opera productions, musicals, concerts, and events nationally and internationally. 

They will have the opportunity to interact and work alongside top South African and international teams from directors to set, costume, lighting, and sound designers.  They will engage closely with every aspect of the production process from the rehearsal room to the stage and work with set builders, scenic painters, sound and lighting departments, technical suppliers, and admin staff.

  1. A general knowledge of basic theater production processes.
  2. Punctuality and good time-keeping skills.
  3. Good computer literacy skills.
  4. The ability to identify and resolve problems promptly and gather/analyze information successfully.
  5. The ability to take instructions and execute them accurately and promptly.
  6. The ability to work well in a team and group problem-solving situations.
  7. The ability to work under pressure on multiple projects at the same time.
  8. Good verbal and written communication skills and good people skills.

Key performance indicators

The following KPIs will apply to the position:

  1. Assist the Head of Production in executing a wide variety of daily administrative duties to fulfill the various technical production requirements such as, but not limited to production schedules, budgets,pettycash, procurement, staff/crew management, transport logistics, and attending meetings. 
  1. Attend all meetings and take detailed minutes. These include general company meetings, presentations and production meetings with the related performing house/ festival, and site visits to manufacturing workshops and suppliers.
  1. Assist the Head of Production with managing the daily flow of communication – emails, phone calls, WhatsApp – to and between performance venues, service providers, and manufacturers.
  1. Assist the Head of Production in organizing and maintaining neat and safe workspaces and off site storage facilities.
  1. Assist in keeping organized and up-to-date records of items in storage facilities and production files.
  1. To abide by the Honour Code of The Cape Town Opera company on both local and international productions.

This opportunity is open to candidates that:

  1. Have a minimum qualification of matric.
  2. Must be a South African citizen.
  3. Are between 18 and 34 years of age.
  4. Have never held a full-time position before and preferably have not participated on a learnership or internship before.
  5. Live within 50 kms from the Artscape Theatre Centre, Cape Town.
  6. Are not currently in full time studies and able to attend this internship full time.
  7. Are willing to be subjected to a credit and criminal check or any industry specific checks required for your job role.
  8. Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups and people with disabilities in accordance with the organisation employment equity plan.

The position is a one-year contract commencing 01 July 2024 and the end date is 30 June 2025. We are based at the Cape Town Opera offices at the Artscape building in Cape Town.
