Bringing Opera To You!

Our National Schools Tour is a unique and transformative initiative that takes the beauty of classical and South African vocal repertoire to every corner of our nation. At the heart of our engagement is the prestigious ABC Motsepe South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE), an annual choral competition hosted by the Department of Basic Education. SASCE stands as a vital school enrichment program, promoting unity in diversity, national reconciliation, social transformation, and cohesion among learners through the powerful medium of choral music.

Building Skills

The Open Section category of SASCE, featuring operatic and oratorio repertoire, is where Cape Town Opera’s National Schools Tour plays a pivotal role. Our approach is distinctive, characterized by a level of intensity and attention to detail that sets us apart. Our team of professional opera singers, facilitators, pianists, and production experts embark on a nationwide tour and, at each school visited, learners undergo a physical warmup and vocal boot camp before engaging in one-on-one sessions with facilitators. These personalized sessions focus on the SASCE repertoire prescribed for their specific voice types, enhancing skills in diction, breathing, phrasing, posture, and acting.

Inspiring Confidence

Our commitment goes beyond mere preparation; it is about instilling confidence and providing a platform for learners to excel in the competitive arena. Facilitators not only share their vocal expertise but also demonstrate how specific arias and ensemble pieces should be interpreted, enriching the learning experience. For many learners, particularly those from rural areas, this tour represents a unique opportunity to interact with professional musicians and to discover their own voices as budding artists.
