Cape Town Opera’s Young Artists, accompanied by José Dias, will enthral you with a magical evening of opera featuring music by Puccini, Donizetti, Mozart and Strauss. The Maynardville Sunday Night concerts are a delightful end to your weekend. Pack a picnic and unwind in the park ahead of an evening of gentle entertainment under the stars. Suggested picnic time arrival is 18:30, the concert commences at 19:45.

LAWRENCE ZAZZO IN CONCERT

The KT Wong Foundation, in its first partnership with Cape Town Opera and Camerata Tinta Barocca, have initiated a visit to Cape Town by one of the world’s leading exponents of Baroque opera, American counter-tenor Lawrence Zazzo.
On 17 February, Mr Zazzo will share the stage at Centre for the Book with two young South African sopranos, Lynelle Kenned and Brittany Smith, and the musicians of Camerata Tinta Barocca. The concert features repertoire from some of Handel’s greatest operas including Orlando, Rodelinda, Giulio Cesare and Alcina.

I CAPULETI E I MONTECCHI

The legend of the feuding Capulets and Montagues of Verona came home to Italy in spectacular fashion with the premiere of Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi in Venice in 1830. Drawing on the earliest versions of the Romeo and Juliet story (the source material for Shakespeare’s classic), Bellini chose to cast his star-crossed lovers as a soprano and mezzo-soprano; their sensuous duets, full of Bellini’s trademark long-breathed melodies, are highlights of this bel canto gem. Featuring a youthful cast drawn from the UCT Opera School and CTO’s Young Artist Programme, this new production will be conducted by Jeremy Silver, the Director of the UCT Opera School. Steven Stead directs, with designs by Michael Mitchell and Kobus Rossouw.

ORPHEE ET EURYDICE

Gluck’s dream of creating a new style of opera, distinguished by classical simplicity and dramatic integrity, was exquisitely realised in his setting of the Orpheus story. Climaxing in the much-loved aria “J’ai perdu mon Eurydice”, his dramatization of Orphée’s descent into the underworld in pursuit of his wife Eurydice stands as a moving testament to the power of music.

Conducted by CTO Associate Music Director Tim Murray, Matthew Wild’s new production will showcase the extraordinary talents of the CTO Chorus, using movement and poetic imagery to create a new vision of this haunting myth.
