Segomotso Shupinyaneng

As a child, Segomotso didn’t go out of her way to be involved with music beyond the usual school singing. In high school, her interest was piqued when a new friend took out some sheet music in class, and she got to know a little about vocal training – after all, music runs in her family and her grandmother was an accomplished singer – but it was more than a year before she’d allow herself to be taken to a choir audition. When she began to excel at singing, no-one was more surprised than Segomotso herself – in her words, she “got the shock of her life”, After school, her talent soon took her to Gauteng Opera and she’d anticipated completing her studies before pursuing opera further, but once again opportunity has come knocking: her role in Cape Town Opera Young Artists Programme is set to open new doors for her.
