Matthew found his passion for opera early, when he happened upon a recording of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the age of 14. It wasn’t until after he had graduated from UCT’s School of Drama and performed as a professional actor for a few years that he found his place on the other side of the proscenium – and at the Cape Town Opera. Some of this Artistic Director’s happiest memories are from the time he spent in the world’s Northernmost opera house, NorrlandsOperan, in the frozen north of Sweden – also his first experience with snowmobiles, reindeer stew and schlager music. He loves to travel and two more of his passions outside of the world of opera are amateur photography and hiking.
