Now holding a Performance Diploma in opera, Marvin Kernelle remembers his first experience of the genre well: during a performance at the Artscape Opera House, he found himself enthralled by the quality of the chorus, the acting and artistry of the principals, and the set and the direction – so much so that he knew immediately that he wanted it all to be a part of his life. Marvin’s happiest memory so far as Chorus Master at the Cape Town Opera is of the 2015 production of Maria Stuarda. During this time he worked closely with conductor Kamal Khan, and Marvin credits Kamal’s guidance for ensuring an intense learning period in his young career. When Marvin’s not being musical, you’ll find him enjoying a good braai – or indulging his romantic side with movies that can’t help but bring a tear or two to his eyes.
